Analyse This Photo

One strategy that has really helped me improve in photography is to look at my photos a little bit critically. I don’t mean point out every little thing that went wrong in the photo, but at least find one element that you could try differently the next time. A big part of photography is analyzing what went well and what could have been improved, which is why I wanted to post this for you to learn how to improve too.

Styling and Composition

Shapes- Our eyes are drawn to shapes in art which is why this is one of the key composition tips for photography. I intentionally placed the bowl of strawberries and two plates with avocado toast so that they formed an implied triangle shape. There is also use of repeating circles by using a round bowl and circular plates.

Framing- In order for the viewer to know what is my main subject, I used framing by putting a napkin and cutlery on the other side of the bottom plate of avocado toast. The direction that the fork and knife are pointing also help guide the viewer's eye around the triangle.

Colours- Another art technique is using a colour wheel to determine which colours to use in a photo. In this case, I wanted to complement the green of the avocado with red from strawberries. This way I am using complementary colours as my colour scheme.

Something that I would do differently next time: I’d move the bottom avocado toast up a little bit so that it is more in the centre of the photo and I’d take the photo from higher up so that the plates and bowls weren’t cut off.
